Description This piece was minted circa 32-31 BC under Mark Antony, who formed one-third of the second triumvirate, along with Octavian and Lepidus. Relations between Antony and Octavian were almost always strained at best, and even the marriage of Antony to Octavia, the sister of Octavian, was not enough to end their rivalry. In fact, the repudiation of Octavia by Antony in favor of Cleopatra was the breaking point in relations between them, and their forces would meet in an epic struggle at Actium to decide the fate of the Roman world. This piece was minted as payment to Antony's Fifteenth legion. The obverse of this type depicts a galley right, with legends ANT.AVG.III.VIR.R.P.C. The slowness of the large galleys of Antony at Actium was a significant disadvantage over the far more mobile ships of Agrippa. The reverse type depicts a legionary eagle between two standards, with legend LEG.XV. This piece shows a couple of banker's marks, but otherwise grades VG, with most devices clear and partial legends. A decent and very affordable example of the legionary coinage of Mark Antony! All coins guaranteed genuine without limitations. Buyer pays postage/insurance, coin shipped on clearance of funds. PA residents please add appropriate sales tax.
