John V and Anna of Savoy, 1341-1391 AD, AV hyperpyron, (2.81g) struck
1341-1347 AD, Constantinople Mint, AN DP O NI K . . . . Andronicus III
kneeling before Christ standing right. / ANA . . . Anna and John facing,
privy marks L R at sides. SB2466; VF, typical striking weakness, clipped,
face of Anna and two obverse faces clear.

Andronicus III was married to Anna of Savoy, and had a son John. John V was
only 9 when his father died and he became emperor. He ruled the tiny empire
under his mother's regency, while a power struggle went on with John VI
Cantacuzenus, once advisor to the last emperor. Anna pawned the crown
jewels to Venice for 30,000 gold hyperons. Venice never did get back their
money, and the crown jewels were not returned.

With the aid of the Turks, John VI took power, ruling as co-emperor with
John V, who he thrust into the background. With the help of the Genoese,
John V seized power and banished his father's former advisor to a
monastery.
