                                Description

     This coin was minted for the Byzantine Empire at Constantinople
     between 1295 and 1320 AD, during the joint reign of Andronicus II
     and Michael IX. The obverse depicts the bust of the Virgin Mary,
     orans, within city walls. The reverse features Andronicus at left
     and Michael at right, kneeling at either side of Christ, who
     stands at center, crowning both emperors, with partial Greek
     legends for ANDRONIKOS.DEC./MIKHAIL.DEC. This piece shows some
     striking weakness, as is typical for the type, but otherwise
     grades a nice VF, with mostly clear devices and partial legends
     visible where struck up, and is composed of good quality gold. A
     nice example of this late Byzantine gold type, catalouged as Sear
     Byzantine 2396. All coins guaranteed genuine without limitations.
