         1143-1180AD ELECTRUM Aspron Trachy of Manuel I. Manuel I was
        the last significant Byzantine Emperor. Byzantium was, oddly,
        a target crusaders during his reign. He ruled very succesfuly
          for nearly 40 years, expanding the borders of Byzantium on
         many fronts. Unfortunately for the Empire, Byzantium was by
           this time surrounded by other powerful Medieval states,
        including the Turks, and Germans. His expansionist tendencies
        weakened his political alliances and eventually led to the end
         of the Byzantine empire and the formation of the new balance
         of powers in feudal medieval Europe. Reference: Sear #1958.
