Description [Image] 900 Yr Old N. Mint "BUST of CHRIST" Gold Coin Constantinople Mint / 1071 - 1078 AD [Image] [Image] Axis Mundi is a major gallery of ancient artifacts and coins located in Santa Fe, New Mexico. We also offer a fine collection of Roman and Byzantine coins with a special focus on gold issues. We are open daily 12 - 6 pm or by appointment after hours. Mention eBay and we'll extend a special 10% discount on any purchases. One of our most frequent questions is, "How do you acquire your artifacts?". We purchase our inventory through auctions, private collections and, on occasion, through other dealers. [Image] Description: We are very pleased to offer this unusual Byzantine Gold Histamenon Nomisma of Michael VII for your consideration. Of particular interest is the fact that this coin was intentionally struck in a slight cup shape known as a "scyphate". These issues are generally poorly struck and often off-center. This rare example, however, is very well centered on both sides and is extremely well struck in high relief. This exceptional coin also maintains much of the original mint luster from its creation over 900 years ago! Our photo does not convey the beautiful luster which is so apparent when viewing this coin in person. In all regards, this coin is one of the best examples of the gold issues of Michael VII we've seen in awhile. Byzantine gold issues are increasing in popularity both with collectors as well as jewelers due to the large portrait of Christ on the obverse. Here's your chance to own a serious piece of Byzantine art and Christian history without spending a fortune. We consider Byzantine gold issues to be a seriously under-valued sleeper for collectors looking for fantastic long term investment. We've placed a very reasonable reserve for a coin of this exceptional quality and type rarity to encourage new collectors....so take advantage! There is no question that you will not be disappointed with this coin. Obverse: Bust of Christ facing, wearing nimbus cruciger, pallium, and colobium, raising right hand in benediction while left hand holds book of Gospels...IC - XC Reverse:Bust of Michael VII facing, wearing crown and loros, holding labarum and globus cruciger ...+MIXAH RACIA O Size: 26 mm Weight: 4.3 grams Reference : SEAR # 1868 * THE DANGERS OF LAST MINUTE BIDDING : Almost without fail after an auction has closed we receive emails from bidders who claim they were attempting to place a bid and were unable to get into eBay. There is nothing we can do to help bidders who were "locked out" while trying to place a "last minute" bid. All we can do in this regard is to urge you to place your bids early. If you're serious in your intent to become a winning bidder please avoid eBay's high traffic during the close of an auction. Its certainly your choice how you handle your bidding, but we'd rather see you a winner instead of being left out during the last minute scramble. * AUTHENTICITY : We are a member of the American Numismatic Association.
