Description This coin was minted for the Byzantine Empire at Constantinople during the reign of Constantine IX Monomachus, who ruled from 1042-1055. The reign of Constantine IX would see a flourishing of art and culture, but would also see the continued decline of the Byzantine military situation, as the empire was having to rely increasingly on less dependable mercenary soldiers. Perhaps the best known event of this reign was the great schism between the the Byzantine Church and the Church of Rome, a breach which was destined never to be healed. The obverse of this piece features the bust of Christ facing, wearing nimbus cruciger, pallium, and colobium, and raising his right hand in benediction. He holds in his left hand a book of gospels, and the legends read +IhS.XIS.ReX.ReGNANTImn. A triple border surrounds the obverse. The reverse features the bust of Constantine IX facing, bearded, wearing crown and loros, and holding long cross and globe surmounted by pelleted cross, with triple border around. The legends read +CwnStAntn.bASILeyS.Rm. This piece grades a very choice EF+, with bold devices and legends all around, little if any wear, and attractive colour and surfaces. A lovely example of this Byzantine gold type, catalouged as Sear Byzantine 1830. All coins guaranteed genuine without limitations. Buyer pays postage/insurance, coin shipped on clearance of funds.
