        641-668AD Byzantine Gold Tremissis of Constans II. Constans II
          was the son of the great ruler Heraclius. During the early
        years of his reign, Constans II faced the initial expansion of
        the new Arabic Muslim powers. He was somewhat of a despot, but
         was a competent administrator and leader. He solidified the
         remaining core of the Byzantine Empire and actually expanded
         the borders in the Balkans, using the captured Slav warriors
        to fight the Arabs on other fronts. Because so many Slavs were
         forced into service as slaves and soldiers in the late Roman
        and Byzantine empires, the name of these people has become the
        root of the word used to this day for slaves. Reference: Sear
