Both sides of this beautiful coin are well struck and still maintain much of the original mint luster. Our photo does not capture the impressive brilliance which is so apparent in person. Of particular interest is the high relief portrait of Constans II. Constans II was the son of Heraclius Constantine and was born in 630. He was made co-emperor in 641 and during the first year of his reign Egypt was lost to the Arabs. The loss of Egypt's considerable riches delivered a serious blow to the future wealth of the Byzantine Empire. Toward the end of his reign Constans moved his imperial residence to Syracuse, though the rest of his family remained in Constantinople. His despotic behavior led to his assassination in 668, and he was succeeded by his son, Constantine IV.
