Description This coin was minted at Constantinople during the reign of Focas, a tyrant who reigned for nearle eight years, from 602-610 AD. His rule was a period of complete disaster for the empire, as civil wars and persecution raged simultaneously, and the empire's frontiers were being threatened from all sides. He would eventually be deposed and executed in 610, as a result of the revolt of the Heraclii. The obverse depicts the draped and cuirassed bust of Focas facing, wearing crown without pendilla, and holding globus cruciger. The legends read d.N.FOCAS.PeRP.AVG. The reverse features an angel standing facing, holding long staff surmounted by Chi-Rho and globus cruciger. The legends read VICTORIA.AVGG.Theta, and the mint mark CONOB appears in the exergue. Coin shows some striking weakness, but otherwise grades a choice EF, with bold devices and legends where struck up, and nice lustrous surfaces. A very attractive example of the type, catalouged as Sear Byzantine 620. All coins guaranteed genuine without limitations. Buyer pays postage/insurance, coin shipped on clearance of funds. PA residents please add appropriate sales tax. Visa/MC accepted for orders of $20 or more. Member ANA, PAN. For more ancients, please visit our WWW page at http://www.philly.infi.net/~mdgeary/ .
