Description This coin was minted at Constantinople during the reign of Maurice Tiberius, who ruled from 582-602 AD. One of the most vigorous of the Byzantine emperors, Maurice had a distinguished military career under his predecessors, and was responsible for successes against the Persians during the latter years of the reign of Justin II. After his accession, Maurice brought the struggle with Persia to a successful conclusion by taking advantage of dynastic problems within the Sassanian Empire. He supported the youthful Khushru II, who thereupon gained possession of the Sassanian throne, and signed a peace treaty, whose terms were quite favorable to the Byzantines. Maurice consolidated what remained in the west of Justinian's reconquests, but was unable to stem the tide of the Slav and Avar advance in the Balkans. This resulted in a great loss of prestige, and eventually led to a military revolt in which Maurice was deposed and slain. The obverse of this type depicts the cuirassed bust of Maurice Tiberius facing, wearing plumed helmet and holding globus cruciger and shield. The legends read d.N.MAVRC.TIb.P.P.AVI. The reverse features an angel standing facing, holding long staff surmounted by a Chi-Rho and globus cruciger, with legends VICTORIA.AVGG.B. The mint/oficina mark CONOB appears in the exergue. Coin shows some striking weakness and is struck on a typical wavy flan, but otherwise grades EF, with bold devices and legends where struck up, and a good bit of the original mint lustre still evident. A nice example of the type, catalouged as Sear Byzantine 478. All coins guaranteed genuine without limitations. Buyer pays postage/insurance, coin shipped on clearance of funds.
