Description This coin was minted at Constantinople during the reign of Justin II, who ruled from 565-578 AD. Justin II was the nephew of Justinian, and was selected for the succession before Justinian's death. On his assumption of power, he found himself beset by many problems resulting from his great predecessor's over ambitious policies. Unfortunately, he was quite unequal to the formidable task. Within five years of his accession, most of Italy was lost to the Lombards, and the Visigoths mounted a successful counter offensive in Spain. On the eastern frontier, a long drawn out war was initiated when Justin refused to pay Khushru the customary tribute. The issue was still unresolved when Justin became mentally ill, and was obliged to appoint Tiberius, Count of the Excubitors, as Caesar in 574. Tiberius acted as regent for nearly four years, but at the end of September 578, the emperor's condition worsened and Tiberius was raised to the rank of Augustus and co-emperor. Justin died shortly afterwards. The obverse of this type depicts the helmeted and cuirassed bust of Justin II facing, wearing plumed helmet and holding globe surmounted by Victory and shield, with legends D.N.IVSTINVS.P.P.AVI. The reverse features Constantinopolis seated facing, head right, holding globus cruciger and spear, with legends VICTORIA.AVGGG.Z, and mintmark CONOB in the exergue. Coin shows a little striking weakness, but otherwise grades a nice lustrous EF, with bold devices and legends where struck up, and nearly full lustre. A choice example of the type, catalouged as Sear Byzantine 345. All coins guaranteed genuine without limitations. Buyer pays postage/insurance, coin shipped on clearance of funds.
