Valued by Sear @ $176 in VF (Roman Coins &their Values 2000 ed.) Crawford 385/2; Volteia 2; Syd. 775; Sear I #313 Hercules (Herakles) was one of the most popular of all Greek heroes, famous for extraordinary strength and courage. Alcmene, wife ofAmphitryon, made love to both Zeus and her husband on the same nightand bore two sons, Hercules (son of Zeus) and Iphicles (son ofAmphitryon). Hercules incurred the everlasting wrath of Hera (wife ofZeus) because he was the child of her unfaithful husband. A few monthsafter his birth Hera set two serpents in his cradle, but the prodigiousinfant promptly strangled them. When he was a young man, Herculesdefended Thebes from the armies of a neighboring city, Orchomenus, andwas rewarded with Megara, daughter of King Creon. The goddess Hera, determined to make trouble for Hercules, made himlose his mind. In a confused and angry state, he killed his own wifeand children. When he awakened from his "temporary insanity," Herculeswas shocked and upset by what he'd done. He prayed to the god Apollofor guidance, and the god's oracle told him he would have to serveEurystheus, the king of Tiryns and Mycenae, for twelve years, inpunishment for the murders. As part of his sentence, Hercules had toperform twelve Labors, feats so difficult that they seemed impossible.Fortunately, Hercules had the help of Hermes and Athena, sympatheticdeities who showed up when he really needed help. By the end of theseLabors, Hercules was, without a doubt, Greece's greatest hero. During those years Hercules performed these 12 labors: he killed theNemean lion and the Hydra; caught the Erymanthian boar and the Ceryneanhind; drove off the Stymphalian birds; cleaned the stables of Augeas;captured the Cretan bull and the horses of Diomedes; made off with thegirdle of the Amazon queen Hippolyte; killed Geryon; captured Cerberus;and finally took the golden apples of Hesperides. 2139 Payment:We accept personal checks, money orders, or PayPal.
