Description This piece was minted circa 108-107 BC under the authority of the moneyer L. Valerius Flaccus. The obverse of this type depicts the bust of Victory winged and draped right, with * below chin. The reverse features Mars walking left, carrying trophy, with legends L. VALERI./FLACCI. and a flamen's cap before, corn-stalk behind. This type appears to record three events associated with the Valeria gens. The first is the successes of L. Valerius Flaccus in the north of Italy against the Gauls in 194 BC. The second event is colonization of Placentia and Cremona by the triumvir of the same name in 190 BC, and referred to by the cornstalk. The third event marked by this type is the appointment of L. Valerius Flaccus, the consul of 131 BC, as flamen Martialis. Coin shows a couple of banker's marks, but otherwise grades a nice F+, with clear legends and devices all around. An attractive example of this scarcer triple commemorative type, catalouged as Valeria 11. All coins guaranteed genuine without limitations. Buyer pays postage/insurance, coin shipped on clearance of funds. PA residents please add appropriate sales tax. MC/Visa accepted for orders over $20. Member ANA, PAN.
