[Image] [Image] ORC4845 Q Titius Pegasus EF Q Titius, AR denarius, (4.11g) c. 90 BC, Head of Mutinus Titinus (Priapus) right, bound with winged diadem. / Q TITI on tablet, from which springs Pegasus right. Titia 1; Syd. 691; C 341/1. Lightly toned EF, soft at centers. The obverse shows a bearded god, Mutinus Titinus, adapted by the Romans from a god in Greek mythology, Priapos of Lampsakos. Priapos was the offspring of Dionysos (god of wine), and Aphrodite (goddess of beauty). According to legend, Hera (always supremely jealous and vengeful) placed a curse upon Priapos during Aphrodite's pregnancy, and he was born so ugly that Aphrodite, though his mother, banished him to the town of Lampsakos. There, he came symbolize abundance, and was accepted as a god, with festivals held in his honor. Priapos was considered a guardian of gardens, and especially vineyards, by both Greeks and Romans. In other Asia Minor towns, Priapos, with an exaggerated phallus, was also considered a god of fertility, and the Romans especially revered him for this, building a Temple for him in Rome, where he was worshipped, especially by young married women. His second name was related to the clan name of the moneyor, Titius. before you bid, if you have a question about this item. to see ALL the wonderful items in this week's eBay sale and our terms of sale [Image] Visit OldRomanCoins today!
