Head of Pietas, personifying piety and dutifulness, to right, PIETAS behind. / Two joined hands holding a caduceus, ALBINVS BRVTI F below. The moneyer, Decimus Junius Brutus, used both his adoptive family name (Albinus) on his coinage, while proclaiming his lineage (Bruti filius). He served Caesar in Gaul, and in 49 B.C., the year prior to the issue of this coin, commanded Caesar's fleet at Massilia. HCRI 26; Crawford 450/2; Sydenham 942, RCV 427, (3.8 gm.). After his service as Moneyer, he was appointed by Caesar as a governor in Gaul, and named in Caesar's will, second to Octavian. Inexplicably, he joined with the more famous Marcus Junius Brutus, and helped to assassinate Caesar. Afterwards, Decimus was pursued by Mark Antony, and (ironically) rescued by Octavian. The Senate appointed him as Commander of the army, but lost the loyalty of his troops, and was executed by order of Antony. Considering those events, the devices used on this coin, struck 48 B.C., are interesting: Pietas represents duty to one's country, the clasped hands represent friendship, and the caduceus represents happiness and prosperity.
