Barry & Darling Ancient Coins Republic Plaetoria 3 Denarius w/ Cybele Moneyer M. Plaetorius M.f. Cestianus (Plaetoria 3) - minted ca. 67 BC "CESTIANVS" behind the turreted head of Cybele right, forepart of a lion behind shoulder, globe beneath chin. "M. PLAETORIVS AED. CVR. EX. SC" curule chair, symbol left (anvil?). Grade : aF/aF - slightly off-center, spotty toning. Notes : The coin refers to the Ludi Megalesiaci celebration in honor of Cybele. The celebrations were under the control of the curule aediles (AED. CVR.). Cybele was frequently seen depicted on Greek and Greek Imperial coins, but less so on Roman Republic and Imperial issues. so it is interesting to find her portrait here. A decent coin for your Republic collection. Copyright © 1999 Barry & Darling Ancient Coins
