AR Denarius (3.65 gm). Eagle standing right on thunderbolt / Hexastyle temple with ornamented pediment. Crawford 487/2a; Sear, CIR 174; Sydenham 1150; Petillia 2. VF, off-center strike, reverse banker's mark. Estimate $200. The reverse depicts the temple of Jupiter, Best and Greatest, on the Capitoline Hill at Rome. The original temple, one of the earliest founded in Rome, was destroyed by fire, but was rebuilt and dedicated in 69 BC. Judging from other issues which contain the letters 'S F' (for sacris faciundis) it is likely that this moneyer or his relatives were custodians of the temple.
