The obverse depicts the head of Juno Sopista facing right, wearing goat's skin, with grain ear symbol behind. The reverse features a gryphon prancing right, with grasshopper symbol below, and legend L.PAPI. in the exergue. The worship of Juno Sopista was introduced into Rome from Lanuvium, the birthplace of the Papia gens. She was the protecting genius of women, accompanying them through life from birth to death. The symbols on the obverse and reverse are related, and there are at least 235 known pairs. They are well executed, and cover the whole range of Roman life and industry, and are of great interest to the antiquarian. They are mostly symbolic of the various trade guilds, with this particular set undoubtedly relating to agriculture. This piece also shows a serrated edge, a device used to combat counterfeiting. It shows a couple of banker's marks, but otherwise grades a nice AVF, with clear to bold devices and legends all around. A very pleasing example of the type, catalouged as Papia 1. All coins guaranteed genuine without limitations. Buyer pays postage/insurance, coin shipped on clearance of funds. PA residents please add appropriate sales tax.
