Description *** Be sure to check CNG's website for recent additions to our inventory *** [Image] Q. Thermus M.f. 103 BC. AR Denarius (3.76 gm). Helmeted head of Mars left / Two warriors fighting; fallen comrade between. Minucia 19; Crawford 319/1; Sydenham 592. Good VF, reverse a tad off-center to right. 712177. This coin is a primer on Republican-era Roman military equipment and tactics. The head of Mars on the front sports a plumed Italo-Corinthian style helmet, a type often worn by Roman officers. The two warriors on the reverse are most probably a Roman (left) and a Gaul (right). The Roman wears a simple "jockey cap" style helmet termed a Montefortino by modern researchers; he wears a thigh-length coat of mail (hamata), fights with a short thrusting sword (gladius), and defends himself with a long, cambered oval shield (scutum). The Gaul wears a horned helmet and holds a smaller, round shield. He appears to be unarmored, wearing only a short tunic. Authenticity unconditionally guaranteed - 14 day return privilege for any reason. CNG accepts for payment: check, money order or credit card (Visa, MasterCard, American Express). The manner of payment accepted is subject to our qualification of the bidder. CNG's Domestic, Canadian, and International postage rates. Pennsylvania residents please add appropriate sales tax.
