[Building Trust in Transactions (tm)] [Building Trust in Transactions (tm)] [Image] Description: We are pleased to offer this genuine 2100+ year old Roman Republican silver Denarius of L. Flaminius Cilo for your consideration. This desirable coin was minted in Rome 109-108 BC and survives in about very fine condition with both sides being well centered and exhibiting a beautiful toned luster. Our photo does not convey the luster which is so apparent when viewing this coin in person. It features a a large portrait of the helmeted Roma, the goddess who personified the people and city of Rome. She was originally only recognized in the eastern provinces where her cult was established in the second century BC and was closely associated with the cult of Zeus. Roma was not actually worshiped in Rome until the time of Hadrian who built a temple dedicated to Roma Aeterna on the north side of the Sacra Via ( sacred street) which was the oldest and best known street in Rome. [Image] [Image] Obverse: Helmeted head of Roma facing right... X below chin and... ROMA behind. Reverse: Victoria in biga, holding a wreath, galloping right... L. FLAMINI below horses and... CILO in exergue. Size: 18 mm Weight: 3.8 grams Reference: Sear 179 This coin also features a mythological scene of the goddess Victoria driving a racing biga ( two-horse chariot ). Victoria was the Roman goddess of victory and was often worshipped by triumphant generals returning from battle. She was held in higher regard by the Romans then her counterpart Nike by the Greeks and when, in 382 AD, her principal statue was removed by the emperor Gratian there was much resistance in the pagan reactionary circles. ( See below for more on Roman chariots ) The artistry and mythological subjects of ancient Roman coins have always been a tremendous lure to collectors. In addition, these heirlooms of the ancient world have become extremely popular as showpieces for modern jewelry. Here's your opportunity to add this 2100+ year old example to your collection. You will not be disappointed with this artistic and historic treasure. The Racing Chariot and the Roman Circus: The two-horse chariot (biga) like the one seen on this coin were often used for racing in Roman circuses. The circus was a building used primarily for chariot racing and was a descendant of the Greek hippodrome. A circus had tiers of seats for spectators, built around a U-shaped arena. In the center of this U was a barrier (spina) with a turning post (meta) at each end. At the open end of the U were the starting gates (carceses) from where up to 12 chariots drove in a counterclockwise direction around the spina for seven laps. At he end of each spina were seven markers, one of which were removed as each lap was completed. The spina were often lavishly ornamented with sculptures, obelisks, water basins and fountains.
