Description [Image] RR-8) L. Cornelius Lentulus, C. Claudius Marcellus AR Denarius, Apollonia, 49 B.C. Cornelia 65; Craw. 445/2. Obv: Apollo's hd. r.; L.LEN[T. C. MA]RC. COS. around Rev: Jupiter stg r., eagle in l. hand over garlanded altar, thunderbolt in r.; star and Q in left field. Grade: Toned F/VG, cms. in obv. field, old scr. on rev. Very Scarce. An important type, one of the first of the "Imperatorial" series. Struck under the authority of the two consuls who supported Pompey against Caesar. This is one of the earliest issues of the Civil War, issued in Apollonia, Greece for the Pompeian armies. The Jupiter is the famed statue of Zeus Eleutherios ("of Liberty") by Myron and set up by the Syracusans as a memorial to their freedom in 460. Clearly, the concept of this type is to invoke the support of the Greeks who hated "tyranny" (ie., in the form of Caesar) as much as did the Roman consuls who had the coins struck. Apollo, meanwhile, would remain a "main deity" for the Pompeians, and later, for the so-called "Liberators" who assassinated Caesar in 44 and would fight Octavian and Antony at Philippi in 42!! This is an important "historical document" attesting to the mindset of those who opposed Caesar at every turn. Now, here is your chance to own one of the classic rarities of the Imperatorial period (the Age of Generalissimi!) without having to pay hundreds of dollars!
