Crawford 44/7; RSC 4. Nice VF, flan crack, minor porosity. 718107. The sestertius, one-quarter of a denarius, was the basic unit of accounting in the Roman currency system. It was originally issued as a small silver coin, like this example, but apparently was unpopular and not issued in great numbers. Silver sestertii remain scarce today. Under the Empire, the sestertius eventually became a more manageable large bronze coin.
