Roman Republic - Silver Denarius, Obverse: Veiled and diademed head of Concordia right; PAVLLVS LEPIDVS CONCORDIA clockwise; all within beaded border. Reverse: Togate figure of L. Aemilius Paullus standing left touching trophy to left of which stand King Perseus of Macedon with his hands tied behind his back and his two sons as captives, TER above, PAVLLVS in exerge; all within beaded border. Condition: Choice EF. Coin is much better than picture. This is a beautiful example of this coin. Great centering, superb surfaces and metal. Lustrous minty metal with dark gray toning in the recesses. Fantastic strike and nice relief for these. All the hair strands both above and below the diadem are shown. The reverse has good detail including the face of Perseus. Interesting T in TER seems to form a cross. Valuation: Why valuation? The strike, centering, excellent state of preservation, make this a very choice example of this coin. Many would describe this coin as an FDC, but I would reserve that grade for a bit better centering. In Sear, Roman Coins and their Values, Millennium Edition, the coin is valued at $88 in VF and $256 in EF. I am always amazed by this coin referring to Perseus who was defeated over a hundred years before its issuance. Size: 3.96 grams, die axis = 4.0, flan 2.2 mm thick, 18.0 mm in diameter. References: Sydenham 926; Crawford 415/1; Aemilia 10; Sear Mill 366. All coins have a 14 day return privilege, no questions asked.
