B&D: Republic Accoleia 1 Fourre Denarius $32 11/27/99 seller Barry & Darling Moneyer P. Accoleius Lariscolus (Accoleia 1), minted circa 43 BC 'P. ACCOLEIVS LARISCOLVS' around the bust of Acca Larentia right. Three statues of the Nymphae Querauetulanae standing, facing, supporting a beam with 5 trees on it. Grade : VF/aVF Notes : This coin is a superb example of the ancient counterfeiters art. It is a plated coin which means it was made by wrapping a bronze core with silver before striking. The only evidence that you can see that it is plated are a few very small areas where the plating has broken revealing the bronze core. It is an interesting coin with several representations that seldom appear on Roman coinage. The obverse portrait is Acca Larentia, the fabled nurse of Romulus. While the Nymphs Querauetulanae on the reverse were said to be the 3 sisters of Phaeton and who presided over the green forests. The green groves of the Lares on Mount Coelius were consecrated to them. [WildWinds DataBank..A Online Research Tool] Copyright © 1999 Barry & Darling Ancient Coins
