Roman Imperial - Scarce - One of the Twelve Caesars Silver Denarius, Rome Mint, Circa May-July 69 AD. Obverse: A VITELLIVS GERMAN IMP TR P; Laureate head of Vitellius right. Reverse: IVPPITER VICTOR Jupiter, naked to the waist, seated left, holding Victory in right hand and vertical sceptre in left hand. Be Sure to click on hyperlinks for more information! Condition: Choice EF, Coin at auction is much, much better than picture. This coin has near perfect smooth surfaces with lustrous light silver. The surfaces are minty with just a bit of subtle golden toning in the protected area of the legends. Excellent strike on the legends with sharp relief. Great portrait of Vitellius superb detail on his hair (much better than picture indicates). Victory and Jupiter are exceptional. The enlarged picture of the reverse below shows the lustrous surfaces and amazing detail on Jupiter's head. Nice relief with strike being 2.4 mm thick! Portrait is much more 3-dimensional than picture indicates. Almost no wear on the legends, either side, indicates the coin has not seen much circulation. Very slight flatness on the high points above the ear and Jupiter's leg is probably due more to the high relief dies and not wear. The ear is fully defined. Superb facial features on Jupiter. A bit of die deterioration at the "E" in "GERMAN" and behind the throne does not significantly detract. The coin is not perfectly centered, but the important parts of the legend are still present. All in all, this coin is a choice example of this scarce issue. Be Sure to click on hyperlinks for more information! Valuation: Why Valuation? This coin has perfect metal, good relief, excellent detail which combine to make it a choice example of this issue. It is listed as scarce in Roman Imperial Coins. The most current price information is found in Sear Roman Coins and their Values, Millennium Edition, where it is valued at $640 in VF and $1,520 in EF. See Triton IV, lot 493 where a choice EF was estimated at $2000 (rated scarce by RIC also); lot 493 has a better centered obverse, an off centered reverse, more flatness on the globe on the reverse, and weaker lettering. All in all, the coin at auction is a bargain at the reserve, you could spend a lot more and not get much better. Size: 3.36 grams; die axis = 7.0; 2.4 mm thick; flan 18.8 mm diameter. References: RIC I 75; BMCRE 8; CBN 40; RSC 44; Sear Mill. 2197. All coins have a 14 day return privilege, no questions asked.
