Auction currency is U.S. dollars ($) unless otherwise noted. Description This piece was minted between 70 and 71 AD for Antioch in Syria during the reign of Vespasian, who ruled from 69-79 AD. Vespasian emerged victorious from the devestating civil wars that followed the death of Nero, and was in large measure responsible for the rebuilding of Rome which followed. Undoubtedly his most well known project was the Flavian Amphitheatre, also known as the Colosseum. The defeat of the First Jewish Revolt also occurred during his reign. The obverse of this type depicts the laureate head of Vespasian facing right, with Greek legends for AVTOKRA.O.VESPASIANOS.KAISAR.SEBASTOS. The reverse features an eagle standing left, wreath in beak, palm branch at left, with Greek legends for ETOVS.NEOV.IEROV.B. Coin shows a little peripheral striking weakness, but otherwise grades a nice VF, with clear to bold devices and legends where struck up. A pleasing example of the type, catalouged as SGI-736. All coins guaranteed genuine without limitations. Buyer pays postage/insurance, coin shipped on clearance of funds. PA residents please add appropriate sales tax. MC/Visa accepted for orders of $20 or more. Member ANA, PAN. Thanks! ------------------------------------------------------------------------ [Image] Bidding Bidding is closed for this item.
