Vespasian, AR Denarius, IMP CAESAR VESPASIANVS AVG, laureate head of Vespasian, facing left. / VICTORIA IMP [VESPASIA]NI, Victoria, personifying victory, stands left on a globe, holding a wreath and a palm branch. Struck 70 A.D. at Tarraco, after Vespasian's arrival in Rome, as part of a series of coins celebrating his military victories. Near EF, Sear/RCV 2260, RSC 630, RIC 268, (3.2 gm.). The tenth of the so-called Twelve Caesars, Titus Flavius Vespasianus, in a career spanning decades, earned a seat in the Senate and accolades for military victories. He was also very lucky: in 66, he dozed off while Nero was singing! Despite that (or maybe because of it), Nero made him Governor of Judaea, then in revolt. Within a year, Vespasianus had subjugated the Jews, except in Jerusalem. He dropped plans to invade that city in favor of scheming to become Emperor, soon after he learned that Nero had committed suicide. His son, Titus, finished the job of putting down the Jewish revolt (except for Masada) in 70 A.D.
