Description Gold Aureus of Roman Emperor Vespasian, ICG EF-45 [Image] Vespasian. 69-79 A.D. Vespasian, a man of relatively humble beginnings, parlayed his military abilities into a place as Emperor of Rome. In 43 A.D. he commanded a legion in Claudius' invasion of Britain, fighting in some 30 battles and taking 20 cities in the process. In 67 A.D. Nero appointed him to prosecute the Jewish War, also known as the First Revolt. It was a difficult and bloody campaign for the future emperor, one which was not completed until September of 70 A.D. when the emperor's son Titus ransacked and desecrated the Temple at Jerusalem, having killed thousands in the process. On July 1, 69 A.D. the troops of Vespasian hailed him as emperor in Alexandria, with the Danubian legions acting in accord. Legions in Spain and the Balkans joined in support of Vespasian and in October of 69 an invasion force defeated the army of Vitellius decisively at the Second Battle of Bedriacum on the 24th and 25th day of the month. Vespasian arrived in Rome shortly thereafter from Alexandria, some 15 months after being hailed as emperor by his troops and more than 9 months after the Senate had recoginzed his claim. He began the process of restoring the empire after years of civil war and proved to be a just and able ruler. His dynasty (the Flavians) replaced the Julio-Claudians as rulers of Rome. Mint of Rome. ICG EF-45. R.I.C. II, 123. Struck 75-79 A.D. A finely detailed portrait of Vespasian with laureate head. Splendid large flan and surfaces.
