Description Coin Central [Image] Gallienus (253-268) SILVER Antoninianus (S. Unknown) F (click HERE for larger image) IT'S NOT TOO LATE FOR CHRISTMAS! Click HERE to learn more OBVERSE: Gallienus, radiate head, right. IMP C P LIC GALLIENVS AVG REVERSE: Victory advancing right. VICTORIA AVGG (Victory of the Emperors) NOTES: True Silver Antoninianus. Minted BEFORE the great debasement, when Gallienus eliminated silver coinage in favor of bronze coins with silver "wash". (Not great quality silver, mind you -- it had already been debased quite a bit by Gallienus's predecessors-- but it was silver all the way through) Minted before his father (Valerian) was captured by the Sasanians. Not the greatest portrait, but Gallienus seems to have brought out the worst in the die engravers ... HISTORY: Gallienus was appointed as co-Augustus with his father, Valerian I, in 253. They came to power in one of the most turbulent times the Empire would know. After settling the civil wars of 253, Valerian tried to stabilize the frontiers, where enemies of Rome had taken advantage of the internal turmoin to invade. Gallienus was sent to stabilize the west, and Valerian headed east. It was the last time they would see each other. Valerian at first would do well against the Persians, but then plague swept through his armies, and he attempted to negotiate a peace settlement with Shapur I, king of Persia. Shapur, however, captured Valerian and held him for the rest of his life. Gallienus won a string of impressive victories against the Germans in the west, but upon the capture of his father, he was suddenly faced with a series of internal uprisings. While his attentions were thus occupied, he was unable to protect the western provinces, and they organized to defend themselves under the provincial governor, Postumus. They then seceded from Rome, forming the "Gallic Empire". Gallienus was wounded in trying to defeat Postumus. No rest for the weary -- Rome was then beset with a massive invasion by the Goths in 268. He had some success in driving them back, but then had to suppress a rebellion by Aureolus, his cavalry commander. While this was going on, he fell victim of a conspiracy among his officers. A false message that the enemy was attacking drew him from his tent in the middle of the night, and he was stabbed to death. It is suspected that his successor, Claudius II, may have had a hand in the conspiracy, and no action was ever taken against Gallienus's murderers.
