(AD 425-455). AV solidus (4.43 gm). Visigothic imitation of Ravenna, 425/6-?ca. 430. Diademed, draped, cuirassed bust of Valentinian III right /VICTORIA AVGGG, emperor standing right in military attire, holding vexillum and Victory on globe, resting foot on captive, R--V across field, COMOB in exergue. RIC 3711 (probably same dies). DO 835. Extremely rare. Extremely fine Kent, in RIC X, classes this variety as a Gallic imitation, produced probably with official permission by the Visigoths who were settled in southwest Gaul in 418. He cites the use of a reverse type proper to Honorius and Theodosius, and "the characteristic Gallic lettering, entirely different from the style in use in Italy" as well as occasional slightly blundered legends. There is as yet no scholarly consensus on the imitative character of this and other coinages described as non-imperial by Kent. In DO this variety is regarded as an accession issue.
