Valentinian II was the son of Valentinian and Justina, and was raised to the rank of Augustus a few days after the death of his father in 375 AD, when Valentinian II was just four years old. He was nominally associated with his half brother in the government of the Western division of the empire, but following the usurpation of Magnus Maximus and the death of Gratian in 383, he was left only in possession of Italy. In 387, Maximus invaded Italy, and Valentinian II fled to Theodosius in the East. The following year, the two emperors marched against the usurper, and Maximus was defeated and executed. Valentinian was thus restored to the government of the West, but on May 15, 392 AD, he was strangled, probably on the order of his general Arbogastes, who had completely undermined the authority of the young emperor. The obverse of this type depicts the pearl-diademed, draped, and cuirassed bust of Valentinian II right, with legends D.N.VALENTINIANVS.P.F.AVG. The reverse features Victory advancing left, holding wreath and palm, with legends VICTORIA.AVGGG., and mint/oficina mark ASIS in the exergue. Coin grades a solid AVF, with clear devices and legends all around, and attractive colour. A pleasing example of the type, catalogued as RIC 39a3. All coins guaranteed genuine without limitations. Buyer pays postage/insurance, coin shipped on clearance of funds. PA residents please add appropriate sales tax. Visa/MC now accepted for purchases over $20. Member ANA, PAN.
