Description This piece was minted at Trier between 364 and 367 AD, during the reign of Valentinian I, who ruled from 364-375 AD. Valentinian rose to high office under Julian II and Jovian, and he was proclaimed emperor at Nicaea after the latter's death in 364. He created his brother Valens as Co-Augustus, and they divided the empire between them, with Valentinian ruling the Western half. His major concern was the defence of the Rhine frontier, and the restoration of law and order in Britain, which had become overrun by Picts, Scots, Franks, and Saxons. It took Count Theodosius two years to restore Roman rule in the province. In 375, Valentinian granted an audience to a delegation of Quadi, and was so enraged at their impudence that he was siezed with an apoplectic fit and died shortly afterward. The obverse of this piece depicts the rosette-diademed, draped, and cuirassed bust of Valentinian facing right, with legends D.N.VALENTINIANVS.P.F.AVG. The reverse depicts Valentinian and Valens seated facing, together holding a globe, between them the upper portion of Victory with outstretched wings, palm branch below and between them, with legends VICTORIA.AVGG., and mint/oficina mark TROBT in the exergue. This piece shows a small flan crack, a couple of faint ticks and a thin well hidden scrape behind the bust, mentioned here for accuracy, but otherwise grades a wonderful Near MINT STATE, with sharply rendered devices and legends, choice lustrous surfaces, only the merest hint of friction on the very highest points, if any rub actually exists at all. But I'll let the scan speak for this magnificent piece. It is superior to both the Hunt and NFA sale specimens of the same or similar types, and is quite possibly among the finest known! An exquisite museum quality example of the type, catalouged as RIC-17b. All coins guaranteed genuine without limitations. Buyer pays postage/insurance, items shipped on clearance of funds. PA residents please add appropriate sales tax. MC/Visa accepted for purchases of $20 or more. Member ANA, PAN.
