Valentinian rose to high office under Julian II and Jovian, and he was proclaimed emperor at Nicaea after the latter's death in 364. He created his brother Valens as Co-Augustus, and they divided the empire between them, with Valentinian ruling the Western half. His major concern was the defence of the Rhine frontier, and the restoration of law and order in Britain, which had become overrun by Picts, Scots, Franks, and Saxons. It took Count Theodosius two years to restore Roman rule in the province. In 375, Valentinian granted an audience to a delegation of Quadi, and was so enraged at their impudence that he was siezed with an apoplectic fit and died shortly afterward. The obverse of this piece depicts the diademed, draped, and cuirassed bust of Valentinian facing right, with legends D.N.VALENTINIANVS.P.F.AVG. The reverse depicts Valentinian standing facing, head right, holding labarum and Victory on globe, with legends RESTITVTOR.REIP. The mint/oficina mark TESB appears in the exergue. Coin shows some striking weakness, but otherwise grades AVF, with clear devices and legends where struck up. A nice example of the type, catalouged as RIC-17a, and listed as Scarce. All coins guaranteed genuine without limitations. Buyer pays postage/insurance, items shipped on clearance of funds. PA residents please add appropriate sales tax. MC/Visa accepted for purchases of $20 or more. Member ANA, PAN. Thanks! ------------------------------------------------------------------------ [Image] Bidding Bidding is closed for this item.
