Description Coin was minted at Antioch during the reign of Valens, who was the younger brother of Valentinian I. He ruled in the East from 364-378, and much of his reign was spent campaigning against the Goths on the Danube frontier and countering the Persian menace in the East. In 376 AD, the Visigoths, hard pressed by the Huns, sought permission to cross the Danube and settle in Roman territory. This was granted, but they were treated so badly by the Romans that they broke into revolt, devestating the countryside of Moesia and Thrace. Valens advanced against the barbarians, but in a great battle fought near Hadrianopolis on August 9, 378 AD, the Roman army was anihilated and the emperor himself slain. The obverse of this piece depicts the rosette-diademed, draped, and cuirassed bust of Valens facing right, with legends D.N.VALENS.P.F.AVG. The reverse features the legends VOT.X.MVL.XX. within a wreath, with mint/oficina mark ANT followed by a crescent in the exergue. Coin grades a choice Near EF, with bold devices and legends all around, and attractive surfaces. It is even nicer in hand than it appears in the scan.
