VF OBV: Laureate draped bust right; REV: Eagle supports Mount Gerizim with Shrines. VERY RARE! Ros-123 MOUNT GERIZIM. The most remarkable design for a city religious coin was produced for Neapolis in Samaria, near modern day Nablus. This coin combines a plan or map of the site, showing the two summits of Mount Gerizim, rock outcrops, stairs, adn rivers, along with the facades of buildings, temples, altars, and shrines built by the biblical Samaritans and later reconstructed and dedicated to the god Zeus by the emperor Antoninus Pius. The eastern coin engravers, probably Greeks, were daring artists and were not averse to taking a chance when designing a coin. Often these city views are rendered with innovative, three dimensional graphics techniques, in order to show the details of the structures and landscape which normally would not be seen in traditional views. This artistic improvisation is usually very creative, and suggests that great artistic freedom was given to the engravers by the authorities in control of the mints. (Marvin Tameanko) TREBONIANUS GALLUS--Caius Vibius Trebonianus Gallus. Emperor 251-254. Appointed to serve as Hostilian's associate. He effected a peace with the Goths which was felt to be degrading by the Romans. He was subsequently murdered by his own soldiers. *Actual coin is better than scan* *Authenticity and satisfaction guaranteed* *Shipping (personal check or money order): $1.50-insured(value less than $50) $2.50-insured(value more than $50) $1.50(regular mail International) $6.00(registered mail International) --------------------------------------------------------------------------- [Image] Bidding Bidding is closed for this item. --------------------------------------------------------------- Announcements | Register | eBay Store | SafeHarbor | Feedback Forum | About eBay Copyright © 1995-1999 eBay Inc.
