Gemini III, January 9th, 2007 Lot # 434 - Auction is closed.Estimate: US$750 / Price Realized: US$1550 Tranquillina, wife of Gordian III. Bronze 32 mm Tranquillina, wife of Gordian III. (). Bronze 32 mm (16.63 gm). Pisidia, Cremna. SAB TRANQVILLNAM AVGVSTAM, draped bust right wearing stephane, crescent behind shoulders / COL IVL AVG FELICIS CREMNENSIVM, Roma seated left, holding globe and cornucopia. Von Aulock, Pisidien, 1404-1408, pl. 31 (all same dies). As this coin has Latin legends, it could fill the nearly impossible spot in a collection of a Tranquillina sestertius. Brown patina. Extremely fine. Provincial coins of Tranquillina in sestertius size and with Latin legends seem to be very rare and may come only from Cremna. Cohen, pp. 90-92, knew no sestertius-sized colonial coins of Tranquillina at all, only middle bronzes and small bronzes. In his corpus of the provincial coins of Pisidia, von Aulock found eleven sestertius-sized coins of Tranquillina at Cremna, all from the same obverse die as our coin, and with two different reverse types. © 2006 Gemini, LLC | Email: info@geminiauction.com ...
