Trajan Decius, AE as, Near EF

Trajan Decius, Æ as, (3.95g) IMP C M Q TRAIANVS DECIVS AVG Laureate, draped
and cuirassed bust right. / No legend. Mars standing half-left, resting
right hand on shield and holding spear with left, S C at sides. RIC 128 (as
semis). Near EF, heavy dark green patina, with touches of red. Ex-CNG IX,
12/89, #483. While usually called "semis" this denomination was probably an
as, part of a small issue in association with the double sestertii of this
ruler. A double sestertius weighed c. 32 grams, while an as weighed c. 4
grams. The semis had not been in circulation for generations.
