TRAJAN silver restored denarius of AD 107. Extremely rare!

TRAJAN. AD 107. Av: Helmeted bust of Roma right. IMP CAES TRAIAN AVG GER DAC P P REST. Rv: Empty triumphal quadriga right, surmounted by small figure of Victory. L RVBRI. The coin maybe "subaerat". Very fine.

The silver restorations revived some of the principal Republican denarius types abd even included an early IMPERIAL past, with attractive portrait types dating back to the time of Julius Caesar. In each case reference to the issuing authority is restricted to an inscrpition, rendered in diminutive lettering, encircling the reverse design: this has the invariable from "IMP CAES TRAIAN AVG GER DAC P P REST". All of these "restored" type" are of considerable rarity today, indicating that the issue was on a very limited scale. (David R. Sear)

The prototype was a denarius struck ca. 87 BC by the moneyer L. Rubrius Dossenus.
