     Trajan. 98-117 AD. Æ Sestertius (25.47 gm). Struck 114-117 AD.
     Laureate and draped bust right / Column on base surmounted by
     statue of Trajan; eagle on either side of column at base. RIC II
     678; BMCRE 1024; Cohen 359. Fine, Tiber patina, light reverse
     porosity. An historically interesting coin! 712834

     The work of the master builder, Apollodorus of Damascus, Trajan's
     column stands as a monument to Rome's greatest military emperor.
     The helical, sculpted frieze 656 feet in length that encircles
     the column records Rome's conquest of Dacia in two campaigns in
     101-3 and 104-6 AD. Originially, and as can be seen on this coin,
     the column was surmounted by a statue of Trajan, but in 1588 in
     an effort to cleanse Rome of its pagan past, Pope Sixtus V
     replaced the statue with another of St. Peter.
