The empire reached its greatest geographic extent under Trajan, the direct result of his many military triumphs. The obverse of this type depicts the laureate bust of Trajan facing right, wearing aegis, with bare chest showing. The legends for the type are IMP.CAES.NER.TRAIAN.OPTIM.AVG.GERM.DAC. The reverse type features Victory walking right, holding wreath and palm, with legends COS.VI.P.M.TR.P.COS.VI.P.P.SPQR. During the imperial period, the quinarius was no longer a regularly issued part of the Roman series, and was struck only for specific purposes, most notably for use in donatives. This accounts for the rarity of imperial period quinarii. This piece grades VG/Fair, with a clearly outlined portrait and about half of the obverse legends visible. The reverse shows part of the outline of Victory, and a few letters of the legend faintly visible. A very affordable example of this rare silver type of Trajan, catalouged as RSC-195b. All coins guaranteed genuine without limitations. Buyer pays postage/insurance, coin shipped on clearance of funds. PA residents please add appropriate sales tax. MC/Visa accepted for orders of $20 or more. Member ANA, PAN.
