A very unusual example: the letters ''C'' and ''V'' can be seen clearly, under the I and O of IOVIS, and other re-engraving is visible within the reverse legend. Apparently, the legend was first partly engraved retrograde, in error, and afterwards corrected. Nearly EF, with mint lustre, on a broad flan. RCV 2444, RSC 106, RIC 211, (3.4 gm.). The eleventh of the so-called Twelve Caesars, Titus Flavius Vespasianus, was Vespasian's eldest son, and is still remembered for his ruthless victory over the Jews in 70 A.D., especially for the destruction of the great Temple in Jerusalem. Though Emperor only a short time, he saw the completion of the Colosseum, and helped Rome recover from a disastrous fire, a devastating plague, and the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius, which destroyed the cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum.
