     Tiberius. 14-37 AD. AR Denarius (3.56 gm). Laureate head right,
     young features / Livia seated right, ornate legs to chair. RIC I
     30; RSC 16a. Near VF. 717739.

     Is it lawful to give tribute to Caesar, or not? Shall we give, or
     shall we not give? But he, knowing their hypocrisy, said unto
     them, Why tempt ye me? Bring me a penny [denarius], that I may
     see it. And they brought it. And he saith unto them, Whose is
     this image and superscription? And they said unto Him, Caesar's.
     And Jesus, answering, said unto them, Render to Caesar the things
     that are Caesar's and to God the things that are God's. (Mark
     12:14-17)

     The exact meaning of Jesus' cryptic remark has been debated for
     20 centuries. However, as Tiberius was the reigning Caesar, the
     denarius of Tiberius is widely thought to be the coin held by
     Jesus Christ when he uttered these immortal words.
