Silver Denarius, Lugdunum mint This coin is commonly referred to as the "Tribute Penny" of the Bible after the well-known New Testament story in St. Matthew's Gospel (22, 17-21). Obverse: TI CAESAR DIVI AVG F AVGVSTVS; Laureat head of Tiberius right. Reverse: PONTIF MAXIM; Livia (as Pax) seated right, holding olive-branch and long vertical sceptre; ornate legs to chair. Condition: CHOICE VF+, Coin is much, much better than picture. This coin is beautiful and looks much better than the grade. It has lustrous surfaces of good smooth metal; unfortunately, the picture does not show that. The medium gray toning with lighter toning on the high spots makes the coin highly attractive. Centering is very good for the issue. The reverse of this coin has excellent detail for the grade and is better than most near EF graded coins. A close up of Livia's face is provided below to show the outstanding detail. Outstanding portrait and very attractive example of this coin. Valuation: Compare to a similar type in CNG 53, lot 1431, where a near EF estimated at $500 sold for $700 + 10%. This coin has a better reverse than the CNG example. The obverse of this coin is equal except for a slight more wear or, more likely, a bit of metal shortage on the high part of his bust. The most current price information is found in Sear Roman Coins and their Values, Millennium Edition, where it is valued at $280 in VF and $600 in EF. Size: 3.68 grams, flan 2.3 mm thick, 18.5 mm in diameter. References: RIC 30; RSC 16a; Sear 1763 variety. All coins have a 14 day return privilege, no questions asked.
