Histories of the time painted Tacitus as an elderly senator who was chosen by his colleauges as emperor at the behest of the army, who wished to distance themselves from the murderers of Aurelian. However, recent scholarship indicates that he may have been another in a series of military men, who were predominant among those serving as emperor during this period. He is said to have died while on campaign in Cappadocia, the rigors of battle being too much for him. The obverse of this type depicts the radiate, draped, and cuirassed bust of Tacitus facing right, with legends IMP.C.M.CL.TACITVS.AVG. The reverse features Mars standing right, presenting globe to Tacitus, who stands left, with legends CONSERVATOR.MILITVM., and the letter P in the exergue. Coin grades a very choice EF, with sharp devices and legends all around, and nearly full silvering present. A very choice example of the scarcer coinage of Tacitus! All coins guaranteed genuine without limitations. Buyer pays postage/insurance, coin shipped on clearance of funds. PA residents please add appropriate sales tax. Visa/MC now accepted for purchases over $20. Member ANA, PAN. Thanks! ------------------------------------------------------------------------ [Image] Bidding Bidding is closed for this item.
