Description ***Please be sure to check our website for recent additions at historicalcoins.com*** [Image] Tacitus. 275-276 AD. Antoninianus (3.10 gm). "Gaul" mint. Radiate, cuirassed bust left / VIRTVS AVG, soldier standing left with spear. RIC V, pt. 1, 67. VF, black patina. Rare with left bust! 715586. The Historia Augusta states Tacitus was an elderly Senator, descended from the historian of the same name, who took the burden of Empire upon himself at the urging of the Senate and the request of an army shamed by its murder of the great Aurelian. Modern scholars have cast doubt on this account, arguing that Tacitus was just another in a long line of short-lived soldier-Emperors. In a recent article in the Celator, however, collector and 3rd century specialist Marco Arrigoni convincingly argues that the HA account may contain a kernal of truth. Tacitus’ coin portraits, which depict an aged, jowly man with an elaborately curled beard, are drastically different from those of his immediate predecessors and successors. He apparently reigned about six months, in which time he inflicted a major defeat on the Goths in Cilicia, but died soon thereafter. Either he succumbed to old age and overexertion or his own troops mutinied and murdered him. Authenticity unconditionally guaranteed - 14 day return privilege for any reason.
