Auction currency is U.S. dollars ($) unless otherwise noted. Description This coin was minted in 226 AD, during the reign of Severus Alexander, who ruled from 222-235 AD. Alexander ruled the empire wisely and well, but was strongly influenced by his mother, Julia Mamaea. This was greatly resented by the army, and along with their perception of Alexander as unwarlike, caused the troops under Maximinus to rise against him, murdering both Alexander and his mother in their camp near Mainz in 235. The obverse of this piece features the laureate and draped bust of Severus Alexander facing right, with legends IMP.C.M.AVR.SEV.ALEXAND.AVG. The reverse features Severus Alexander standing front, head left, sacrificing out of patera over a tripod altar. The legends read P.M.TR.P.V.COS.II.P.P. Coin shows a little striking weakness and some light granularity, but otherwise grades VF, with clear devices and legends where struck up. A nice example of the type, catalouged as RSC-289. Buyer pays postage/insurance, coin shipped on clearance of funds. PA residents please add appropriate sales tax. Visa/MC accepted for orders of $20 or more. Member ANA, PAN.
