RIC 133a. Near VF detail, brown tone, porous. Severus came from the Danube river region, and was not well known, but he was a friend of Emperor Galerius. When Diocletian and Maximian abdicated, the latter put Severus forward to succeed Galerius, who was being elevated to Augustus. This did not please the troops, who preferred Constantine to Severus. And the elevation of Severus to Augustus a year later made matters worse, because Severus had disbanded some of the army. Maxentius attempted a coup in Rome, and when Maximian came out of retirement to support him, Severus' troops mutinied, and he was imprisoned, then later executed.
