Unpublished Severus II follis obv: IMP C FL VAL SEVERVS PF AVG rev: GENIO POPVLI ROMANI ANT with two dots in ex, [epsilon] in field ; 27mm In RIC VI, Antioch Group II folles cover the begining of the Second Tetrarchy, with Galerius and Constantius as Augusti, and Severus II and Maximinus as Caesars. GENIO POPULI ROMANI folles were struck for all for rulers in 10 officianae, with ANT in ex together with two stacked dots, and the officina letter in the right field (RIC 74a/b, 75a/b). In RIC this period is defined as May 305 - July 306. According to RIC, this issue continues uninterrupted through Group III folles (July 306 - December 308), following the death of Constantius, for Galerius and Maximinus only. Sutherland's note states that: "the aes of Group II (ii) continued into Group III with unchanged Genio Populi Romani folles for Galerius and Maximinus (though probably not for Severus as Augustus)" RIC VI notes, on page 624, that the double dot series carried forward from 305-306 (Series II) into 306-308 (Series III) without Constantius I and Severus as Augustus. But, it notes that though none were know to him it was included by Kent in N.C. 1957, p. 69, no. 1084. However, it looks very much like this is in fact an example of the Severus Augustus follis described as missing from that issue. Contributed by Robert Bernobich, April, 2006.
