Currency is U.S. dollars (US$) unless otherwise noted. Description This piece was minted in 197 AD, during the reign of Septimius Severus, who ruled from 193-211 AD. Septimius Severus was one of three provincial governors who answered the call of an outraged public to oust the shamefully elected Didius Julianus, who literally had bought the throne in an auction. He was first to arrive in Rome, and easily dispensed with the deserted Julianus, who was beheaded in his palace. He then dealt with the forces of the other two governors, and became master of the Roman world. This type depicts the laureate head of Septimius Severus facing right, with legends L.SEPT.SEV.PERT.AVG.IMP.VIIII. The reverse type features Hercules standing half-right, resting on club, holding bow, lion's skin over arm. The legends for the type read HERCVLI.DEFENS. Coin is struck on a typical smallish flan, but otherwise grades F+/F, with clear devices and most of the legends visible. A very decent example of this popular type, catalouged as RSC-212. Buyer pays postage/insurance, coin shipped on clearance of funds. PA residents please add appropriate sales tax. MC/Visa accepted for orders of $20 or more.
