Description This piece was minted circa 200 AD, during the reign of Septimius Severus, who ruled from 193-211 AD. Septimius Severus was one of three provincial governors who answered the call of an outraged public to oust the shamefully elected Didius Julianus, who literally had bought the throne in an infamous auction. He was first to arrive in Rome, and easily dispensed with the deserted Julianus, who was beheaded in his palace. He then dealt with the forces of the other two governors, and became master of the Roman world. The obverse of this type depicts the laureate head of Septimius Severus facing right, with legends L.SEPT.SEV.PERT.AVG.IMP.VIII. The reverse type features Septimius Severus on horseback right, raising right hand, with legends ADVENTVI.AVG.FELICISSIMO. Coin is struck on a slightly smalish flan, but otherwise grades VF, with clear to bold devices and legends where struck up, and attractive colour and surfaces. A pleasing example of this scarcer type, ca6talogued as RIC-74. All coins guaranteed genuine without limitations. Buyer pays postage/insurance, coin shipped on clearance of funds. PA residents please add appropriate sales tax. We're sorry, but we can no longer accept credit cards. Items shipped to Italy must be done via Registered Mail, and are at the buyer's risk. Member ANA.
